10 Paradoxes

frontdetail-paradox-of-poweA paradox is a true statement or group of statements that leads to a contradiction or a situation which defies intuition; or, inversely, it can be an apparent contradiction that actually expresses a non-dual truth (cf. Koan). Typically, either the statements in question do not really imply the contradiction, the puzzling result is not really a contradiction, or the premises themselves are not all really true or cannot all be true together. The word paradox is often used interchangeably with contradiction. Often, mistakenly, it is used to describe situations that are ironic.

The recognition of ambiguities, equivocations, and unstated assumptions underlying known paradoxes has led to significant advances in science, philosophy and mathematics. But many paradoxes, such as Curry’s paradox, do not yet have universally accepted resolutions.

Sometimes the term paradox is used for situations that are merely surprising. The birthday paradox, for instance, is unexpected but perfectly logical. The logician Willard V. O. Quine distinguishes falsidical paradoxes, which are seemingly valid, logical demonstrations of absurdities, from veridical paradoxes, such as the birthday paradox, which are seeming absurdities that are nevertheless true. Paradoxes in economics tend to be the veridical type, typically counterintuitive outcomes of economic theory. In literature a paradox can be any contradictory or obviously untrue statement, which resolves itself upon later inspection. (Wikipedia.com)

10 Paradoxes On Creative People & My Opinion
Based On Creativity: The Work and Lives of 91 Eminent People, by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, HarperCollins, 1996.

1. Creative people have a great deal of physical energy, but they’re also often quiet and at rest.

In my opinion, among all of the paradoxes that been stated, there are no exact criterion to describe the word creative or creative people. But somehow those people who are “consider as creative” may have some similarities in them. Well, the term of a great deal of physical energy are very often seen in creative people, mostly they are have this two reverse habits. If an idea comes up to mind, then they could be as active as a multilevel marketing salespeople. Infact, they’ll do anything to make those ideas come true. However, among their spare time those creative people most likely “some time” which can be as long as they want to recharge the brain.

2. Creative people tend to be smart yet naive at the same time.

Well, I am not agree if creative people consider as naïve at the same time. See the terms of smart and naïve are very different and there are no relation among it . Creative people just have “difference” way to express them self, eventough their difference are mostly considered as strange or impossible. But we do need differences, do we?

3. Creative people combine playfulness and discipline, or responsibility and irresponsibility.

This paradox comes up with an interesting fact! It is strange that most creative people are those who are seems to be irresponsible and not discipline, which may seen from their appearance, life cycle, etc. However, I believe that they have their own way to be so called discipline and responsible. In addition, creative people are very playful (in a different way of course).

4. Creative people alternate between imagination and fantasy, and a rooted sense of reality.

I can’t agree more with this paradox, creative people are having this “thing” that other not have. It is the ability to explore ideas beyond their deep imagination and fantasize it. However, I believe the ideas that produce are also realistic. (Or realistic on their own term of “reality” and “make sense”?)

5. Creative people trend to be both extroverted and introverted.

I did not agree with this paradoxes, because there are no supporting data. Come on is there any research before? I believe not. In addition there are no specific measurement or criterion on the terms of extroverted and introverted. Those creative people are today extrovert and tomorrow introvert, it is up to them actually ☺

6. Creative people are humble and proud at the same time.

I don’t really know about this paradox true or not, however, those people I know whom I considered as creative are very humble and proud at the same time. I believe, this is a good thing for them, since they are going to make a difference in today’s world so they need to be humble in order to be accepted. And yes, the proud thing! Have to be careful about this most people can’t differ the term of proud or “too proud”.

7. Creative people, to an extent, escape rigid gender role stereotyping.

Those creative people true criterion are free minded, mostly they are open to every possibility that could or could not happen. I believe that those people must consider those narrowed thinking such as escape rigid role stereotyping. In my opinion, if you want to be creative it refers to make a difference or to think outside the box and I don’t think the needs to make a limitation about specific things are required.

8. Creative people are both rebellious and conservative.

Again, I don’t agree with the correlation in between two different words and it’s definition. I believe that those creative people are spread into different categories, some of them are might be rebellious and some of them not. In every side of a story, there will be a two different opinion and a relation of it, so it could be there are the category of both rebellious and conservative at the same time. In addition, I think that just because most success and famous creative people ate people who are considered as rebellious (e.g drop out from college). So, people are consider them have the same type while actually it’s not.

9. Most creative people are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well.

Of course they are very passionate people, moreover obout their work and ideas. They are those people who are willing to strive to get what they want. However, creative people are mostly objective because they could see something from different side from anyone else’s. Being an objective rather than a subjective people had it’s own advantages, they could use spread theor creativity to impress the subjective buyer.

10. Creative people’s openness and sensitivity often exposes them to suffering and pain, yet also to a great deal of enjoyment.

I agree with this paradox, I think that creative people openness and sensitivity could exposes their suffering and pain. This is because they are those people who are very expressive to their feelings. However, this suffering and pain could be a new object of creative object to express what they really feel. In addition, the could also share with other their suffer and pain, maybe there are people who are someway have the same pain? Really nice being creative isn’t it?

Some words of organizational Innovation…

Luecke and Katz (2003), who wrote:

“Innovation . . . is generally understood as the successful introduction of a new thing or method . . . Innovation is the embodiment, combination, or synthesis of knowledge in original, relevant, valued new products, processes, or services.

Amabile et al (1996) propose:

“All innovation begins with creative ideas . . . We define innovation as the successful implementation of creative ideas within an organization. In this view, creativity by individuals and teams is a starting point for innovation; the first is necessary but not sufficient condition for the second”.

Davila et al (2006), write:

“Innovation, like many business functions, is a management process that requires specific tools, rules, and discipline.”

Creativity may be displayed by individuals, but innovation occurs in the organizational context only.

Davila et al (2006) comment,

“Often, in common parlance, the words creativity and innovation are used interchangeably. They shouldn’t be, because while creativity implies coming up with ideas, it’s the “bringing ideas to life” . . . that makes innovation the distinct undertaking it is.”

What is creativity

What Is Creativity To Me?

“Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.”
Mary Lou Cook

Today, I was browsing at the internet and curious about the creativity definition. I was thinking that these days people tend to use the word of creativity in daily life with or without knowing the meaning it self. Well, after a few cups of coffee and a couple of hours of thinking (read; browsing) I finally know what is creativity definition to me. Ideally creativity is to create a piece of work based on your imagination and your original ideas. This is the concept you must learn before you start working on your creativity. Creativity sometimes implies on the fact that our mind facilitate the habitual concept of imagining and innovating.

It is accurate in a way but it is also throughout our passion, courage and commitment. Passion will make you work, passion is a strong emotion of belief and passion will enable you to develop. Courage is needed for you to break out of your shell, not be frightened to try new things and to make mistake as a process of learning. To commit is to take dedication in what we do. Commitment is an important role because it is to hold your belief and to keep working on it.

To be creative is to be original, functional and achievable. To be original is important if it is not original it is not creative. If it is functional then it is true and it becomes a piece of work if you don’t imply it to produce functional product then it has become at most, our imagination. It has to be achievable because if its not achieved then it is not yet complete and it is not yet real.In applying our creativity we must not surrender our self to logic. Because creativity itself is mostly from our imaginative ideas.

Creativity is a people inclination to think beyond the ordinary way. It is a process to transfer imagination into an action, for me creativity is not yet happens without an action. There are no specific categories of how we can learn creativity; it is basically a human’s nature that already takes it is place in people mind and to develop creativity we need practice and knowledge. So people… don’t be afraid to start, there is no boundaries of us thinking creatively… you can start from re-decorating your room or mix and match your clothes! It is just two simple words; learn and try. Good luck!!!!
